About Watauga Lake
10 questions
Where is Watauga Lake?
Watauga Lake is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northeastern Tennessee, straddling Carter County and Johnson County. The lake sits at approximately 2,000 feet elevation near the towns of Butler and Hampton, about an hour south of Johnson City, TN and the Tri-Cities metro area.
How big is Watauga Lake?
Watauga Lake covers approximately 6,430 acres with over 100 miles of shoreline. The lake was created in 1948 when the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) built Watauga Dam on the Watauga River. It reaches depths of over 300 feet near the dam, making it one of the deepest lakes in Tennessee.
What is there to do at Watauga Lake?
Watauga Lake offers boating, fishing, swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, water skiing, and pontoon cruises. On land, you can enjoy hiking along the Appalachian Trail (which crosses the lake area), camping, visiting local shops and restaurants in Butler and Hampton, and exploring the surrounding Cherokee National Forest.
Is Watauga Lake good for fishing?
Yes! Watauga Lake is known for excellent fishing. Popular species include smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, brown trout, rainbow trout, and crappie. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency regularly stocks the lake. Several marinas offer boat rentals and fishing supplies.
Are there boat ramps at Watauga Lake?
Yes, there are several public boat ramps maintained by the TVA around the lake, including ramps at Watauga Dam, Pioneer Landing, and other access points. Most are free to use. Several marinas also offer boat launching for a fee along with boat rentals, fuel, and supplies.
Can you swim in Watauga Lake?
Yes, swimming is permitted in Watauga Lake. While there are no designated public swimming beaches, many visitors swim from their boats, docks, or along the shoreline. The water is exceptionally clean and clear — it is one of the cleanest lakes in the southeastern United States.
Are there campgrounds at Watauga Lake?
Yes! There are several campgrounds in the Watauga Lake area including sites within the Cherokee National Forest, Pioneer Landing, and private campgrounds. Options range from primitive tent camping to full-hookup RV sites. Some vacation rentals also offer camping-style experiences.
What is the history of Watauga Lake and Old Butler?
Watauga Lake was created in 1948 when the TVA dammed the Watauga River for flood control and hydroelectric power. The original town of Butler was flooded and relocated to higher ground — now known as "New Butler." The story of Old Butler is a significant part of the area's heritage. Remnants of the old town are occasionally visible when water levels drop.
What is the best time to visit Watauga Lake?

Winter is quieter but offers peaceful scenery and is popular with trout fishermen. The area is beautiful year-round.

My post was declined or removed. Why?
Business promotion posts must follow the group rules. Common reasons for decline include: posting from a personal profile instead of your business page, posting more than once per month, not being a current sponsor, or including links that Facebook's automated system flags (like Amazon links). Make sure you're posting from your business page and review the full group rules below. If you believe your post was declined in error, message the admin team.

Why was my post flagged by Facebook?
Facebook's automated moderation sometimes flags legitimate posts by mistake. Common triggers include links to Amazon or other shopping sites, certain keywords, or posts made during periods when Facebook has increased scrutiny on the group. This is a Facebook limitation, not a group rule. If your post was incorrectly flagged, message the admin team and we'll review it.

What about pet or animal posts?
Lost or found pets in Butler, TN may be posted. Outside of that, animal sale, adoption, and rehoming posts are strictly prohibited. This is a Facebook policy — groups that allow these posts risk being shut down by Facebook. Please use dedicated pet adoption platforms or local animal shelters for rehoming needs.
Can I respond to posts offering my services even if I'm not a sponsor?
Yes! Any business is welcome to respond to a member's post requesting services or products they offer. For example, if someone asks for a recommendation for a lawn service, you're welcome to reply offering your business. What you cannot do without a sponsorship is create your own standalone promotional post (beyond your one-time introduction).
