Watauga Lake is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northeastern Tennessee, straddling Carter County and Johnson County. The lake sits at approximately 2,000 feet elevation near the towns of Butler and Hampton, about an hour south of Johnson City, TN and the Tri-Cities metro area.
How big is Watauga Lake?
Watauga Lake covers approximately 6,430 acres with over 100 miles of shoreline. The lake was created in 1948 when the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) built Watauga Dam on the Watauga River. It reaches depths of over 300 feet near the dam, making it one of the deepest lakes in Tennessee.
What is there to do at Watauga Lake?
Watauga Lake offers boating, fishing, swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, water skiing, and pontoon cruises. On land, you can enjoy hiking along the Appalachian Trail (which crosses the lake area), camping, visiting local shops and restaurants in Butler and Hampton, and exploring the surrounding Cherokee National Forest.
Is Watauga Lake good for fishing?
Yes! Watauga Lake is known for excellent fishing. Popular species include smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, brown trout, rainbow trout, and crappie. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency regularly stocks the lake. Several marinas offer boat rentals and fishing supplies.
Are there boat ramps at Watauga Lake?
Yes, there are several public boat ramps maintained by the TVA around the lake, including ramps at Watauga Dam, Pioneer Landing, and other access points. Most are free to use. Several marinas also offer boat launching for a fee along with boat rentals, fuel, and supplies.
Can you swim in Watauga Lake?
Yes, swimming is permitted in Watauga Lake. While there are no designated public swimming beaches, many visitors swim from their boats, docks, or along the shoreline. The water is exceptionally clean and clear — it is one of the cleanest lakes in the southeastern United States.
Are there campgrounds at Watauga Lake?
Yes! There are several campgrounds in the Watauga Lake area including sites within the Cherokee National Forest, Pioneer Landing, and private campgrounds. Options range from primitive tent camping to full-hookup RV sites. Some vacation rentals also offer camping-style experiences.
What is the history of Watauga Lake and Old Butler?
Watauga Lake was created in 1948 when the TVA dammed the Watauga River for flood control and hydroelectric power. The original town of Butler was flooded and relocated to higher ground — now known as "New Butler." The story of Old Butler is a significant part of the area's heritage. Remnants of the old town are occasionally visible when water levels drop.
What is the best time to visit Watauga Lake?
Summer (June through August) is the most popular time for water sports and swimming. Fall offers spectacular foliage and fewer crowds. Spring is ideal for fishing and hiking as temperatures warm. Winter is quieter but offers peaceful scenery and is popular with trout fishermen. The area is beautiful year-round.
What towns are near Watauga Lake?
The closest towns are Butler and Hampton, Tennessee. Nearby communities include Mountain City, Elizabethton, and Roan Mountain. Johnson City and the Tri-Cities metro area (including Kingsport and Bristol) are about an hour away and offer additional shopping, dining, and amenities.

Most listings are reviewed and approved within 1-2 business days. Sponsored listings (Bronze, Silver, Gold) may be expedited.

Yes! Business owners can log in to their dashboard to update their listing information at any time, including hours, photos, contact details, and description. You can also contact us for assistance.
Are there any requirements or criteria my business needs to meet to be listed?
We primarily feature businesses that serve the Watauga Lake area and surrounding communities. Your business should be a legitimate, operating establishment. We reserve the right to review and approve all listings.
